The Ingenious Working Mechanism

The PSA process utilizes two adsorption towers packed with molecular sieves or adsorbent materials, typically carbon molecular sieves. These adsorbents have a higher affinity for oxygen and other impurities than nitrogen. The cycle involves four main steps:

  1. Adsorption: In this phase, the feed air containing oxygen and nitrogen flows through one adsorption tower while the other undergoes depressurization.
  2. Depressurization: As the feed air continues to flow through the adsorption tower, nitrogen gas is extracted, while the adsorbent captures impurities like oxygen.
  3. Purge: To regenerate the adsorbent material, a portion of the nitrogen gas produced is redirected into the depressurized tower to remove the captured impurities.
  4. Pressurization: Finally, the adsorption tower is pressurized, and the cycle repeats.
