At this medical oxygen plant, a twin-tall PSA system with a composite bed filled with activated alumina and specific-grade molecular sieves receives compressed air at 6.0 to 8.0 kg/cm2g from an air compressor system with a refrigerated type dryer. Molecular sieves absorb CO2 and nitrogen, whereas activated alumina absorbs moisture from the air. Therefore, the exit offers oxygen gas that is approximately 93+3% pure. Through the use of a sequence controller and a set of change-over valves, the towers are turned over after a certain cycle period. This causes the first tower to regenerate concurrently with the second tower. The tower changeover cycle can be performed indefinitely, and the outlet is always supplied with oxygen gas. The gas available at the PSA oxygen system exit is transported to a surge vessel to handle the pressure changes caused by the time-varying pressure in the adsorbers. Initially, the gas can be released via a three-way valve. Once the produced gas reaches the required quality, it can be sent to the system for final application.
